48 The Process of Being a Disciple

The Process of Being a Disciple

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
Matthew 28:19 ESV

I’m a disciple of Jesus who accepts and assists in spreading His teachings, and I hope you are too! We may not always think and act sinlessly, obeying his teachings, but thankfully, He will continue to work in us until the day He returns.

In the same way that children cannot skip their teen years suddenly becoming mature adults, we cannot bypass the progression to spiritual maturity. While some spiritual growth can take place instantaneously, most growth is a step-by-step process over a lifetime to achieve change. Unfortunately, we live in an age which people expect microwave, jiffy, and instant. We want spiritual growth to take place quickly.

Jesus’ disciples began with the desire to follow Him and spread His Word. Along the way, they had some not so spiritual moments, including deserting and denying Him. But they persevered and after Pentecost grew into spiritual maturity that equipped them to bear up under intense pressure and persecution. Their growth did not happen overnight but through progressively being conformed to His will.

God’s goal for our lives is that we would grow up to be like Jesus. We can, by choice, commit to the process of being a daily disciple of Jesus Christ. Then Jesus Christ will be lifted up to the world as the entire body of Christ fits together.

Do not be discouraged because you have not yet arrived at a place of perfection in everything that you think and do. God examines your heart. If He sees that you love Him and are cooperating with the work He is doing in you, He is pleased. He knows that you are a work in progress and will be for as long as you live.

Be thankful for where you are in your spiritual maturity, and choose to press on to the work ahead.

The Message Bible says in Philippians 1:6, “There has never been the slightest doubt in my mind that the God who started this great work in you would keep at it and bring it to a flourishing finish on the very day Christ Jesus appears. He will carry it through to completion; He won’t stop before it is complete on the day that Christ Jesus returns.”

Will you choose to be confident of God’s ability to complete His work in you, why shouldn’t you, too? Now, that’s the choice-driven life!

Prayer for Salvation:

God in Heaven, I come to You in the name of Your Son, Jesus. I confess that I haven’t lived my life for You. I believe that Jesus is the Son of God. I believe that He died on the cross and rose again from the dead so I might have a better life now and eternal life in heaven. Jesus, come into my heart and be my Lord and Savior. From this day forward, I’ll live my life for You to the best of my ability. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.
