Overcoming Rejection

But you are the ones chosen by God ... from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted. 1Pe 2:9-10

Everybody, I talk to, black or white, suburban, rich or poor can relate to rejection. Derek Luke

No one can make you feel inferior without your consent. Eleanor Roosevelt

It is dangerous to be concerned with what others think of you, but if you trust the Lord you are safe. Proverbs 29:25

Why do you fear rejection?

Have you ever felt rejection?

Rejection is a very difficult thing for us to walk though, it is very hurtful and it wounds us deeply.

Maybe you can remember in your own life the seasons and times that you felt rejection from people, rejection from authorities or maybe even from family members. Sometimes people feel rejection on the job, because somebody else got a promotion that they felt like they deserved. People get rejected because of their religion.

You know every girl struggles with comparison or rejection or struggles with what people think about them. But if we base our lives on what we see in the magazines or what society portrays what we need to look like, then we won’t live free to the potential that God has created us to be.

The truth is that people look on the outside, sometimes the way we look or the things that we have gone through or the way we dress, the way that things are going on in our lives pushes people away from us.

That’s why the bible says; don’t even compare yourself with somebody else. Understand that you are uniquely and divinely created for a special purpose and plan.

Maybe you have felt labeled by other people, or maybe you have even put labels on yourself. Stuff like “useless or ugly, worthless, defeated or failure”.

I had a sister that struggled with an eating disorder; it all started when she was 17 and left this earth when she 61. A very sad situation. She had been hospitalized several times but never came to the full realization to really do something about it. She had been given so many labels and people had said so many hurtful things over her life that she didn’t know how to cope and in the end her body gave up.

She never had the opportunity to look into God’s Word and see God’s Word as a mirror, to see that she was beautiful and that she was wonderfully made. That God had a plan for her life and discover that her identity was no longer in what people said about her, but that her identity was found in Jesus Christ.

It is so important to find out what God says about us, to get into His Word and to see that He loves us and accepts us no matter what, no matter the situation we may be in, no matter what kind of person we are. He loves us and accepts us the way we are.

It doesn’t matter what people say about us, if we know what God says about us because God is the Creator of it all.

I want to encourage you, no matter what is has been said against you and no matter what labels have been put on you. God has a plan for your life and as we look into God’s Word, we begin to realize who He says we are and that we are wonderfully made.

You might feel like the outsider, or feel like you are rejected. You might feel like the rejected or the ugly one. You might feel like the one that is not important or who doesn’t have enough. God doesn’t measure His measures on what you perform or what you or what you look like; He wants to embrace you. God loves you and he accepts you as His own.

I think the most important thing that we can learn in our walk with God is that He accepted us. Many times, in the world that we are living in because of abuse, because of divorce, because of various hurt and heartache situations that people have gone through; there is great rejection in our lives.

When we look at who Jesus was in the gospels; he was loving and he was compassionate. He is not going to leave us, no matter what we face in life He always stays with us.

We have to remind ourselves consistently of our DNA in Christ and that our DNA comes from Him. Because in life we will be faced with times of rejection whether it is at work or family or friends.

Is 53:3 says that Jesus Himself was despised and rejected of men. Jesus came into this earth to identify with our humanity and with everything that we would go through. He went to the cross for us to bridge the gap that had happened because of sin; to bridge that gap between Him and the Father. He accepted people and by speaking into their lives, He raised them in their thinking that they could be different.

Many times when people are looking for the love of God are willing to do anything. In our relationship with Him, we find that peace that we need that when we are around people, we are not looking for people to fill that need and that gap. We have that need being met in our relationship with Him.

So, this whole thing of rejection can work in many aspects of your life, but to overcome it is when we come to the realization that God is our Father. When you keep your eyes on Jesus, on the promises and on The Word and in your prayerlife He will strengthen you in the middle of everything that you are walking through, so that you can move forward with your life.

1Pe 2:9-10  But you are the ones chosen by God, chosen for the high calling of priestly work, chosen to be a holy people, God’s instruments to do his work and speak out for him, to tell others of the night-and-day difference he made for you– from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted.

We all face rejection at some time in our life. How we respond to that rejection defines us. It is very important that you know that Jesus Christ Himself was rejected. He was rejected by the whole world. Here He was, He gave His whole life and showed compassion to and brought healing to people. He set people free. And yet in that final moment on the cross including those that were closest to Him turned their backs on Him.

You know, the wonderful thing is that Jesus can identify with you; He understands rejection. He wants you to know as you accept Him into your heart that you are accepted in the beloved. God accepts you; when you accept Him, He will accept you.

Right now, His love is reaching to you so much and He wants to bring freedom and healing in your heart. You may struggle with people who have rejected you and I want you to know that you can forgive that person today. Jesus forgave you which enables you to forgive that person. As you do you will be set free.
