Does Developing Spiritual Habits Leave You
Feeling Overwhelmed?

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season, we will reap if we do not give up.
Galatians 6:9

“I could never have done without the habits of punctuality, order, and diligence. The determination to concentrate myself on one subject at a time.” Charles Dickens

For those who belong to Jesus Christ, forming new habits by yielding control to the Holy Spirit becomes a way of life. Formation of these new habits is a response to a call from God’s heart to our own. Successful people have successful habits. Unsuccessful people do not. But it takes time and focus to develop any beneficial habit.

Charles Dickens links the successful development of habits with “concentrating on one subject at a time.” This has been true in my experience. But yet, when we have so many areas that we want to change, it can be overwhelming to know where to start and how to be consistent. However, every journey begins with a single step and every building with a single cornerstone. When overwhelmed, our human tendency is to take no action. But focus, discipline and consistency are required if we are to progress.

Here are three practices that will cut through feelings of being overwhelmed:

1. Meditate on the Word of God
If we want success and prosperity in we need to put God and His Word as number one on our daily to do list. The way to remove fear, doubt and unbelief is meditation on God’s Word. (Joshua 1:8; Psalm 1:1-3; 3 John 2)

2. Pay Attention to What We Say
We either align ourselves with God’s provision (and express our gratitude) or we accuse Him of failing us. The moment our words don’t line up with the Word of God, we are accusing Him. Our words shape our daily life. God inhabits our praise not our complaining. We believe most strongly what we hear ourselves say, so we need to say and thus hear what God says (Psalm 112:1-5; Psalm 119:11 & 105; Proverbs 18:21; Isaiah 55:11).

3. Redeem the Time We Have
Instead of waiting until everything is perfect to take action, we must make the most of the time we have. The Revised Standard Version translates “redeeming the time” as “buying up for yourselves the opportunity.” We redeem the time by seizing the moment and doing as the Bible instructs us such as: praying a prayer of salvation with someone, instructing one of your children, expressing love, practising patience and so forth.

Will you choose to remain consistent and to reap in due season? Now, that’s the choice-driven life!
