17 In The Hands of The Potter

In The  Hands of The Potter

… I, the LORD, have power over you, just as a potter has power over clay.
Jer 18:6 CEV

A Word Picture

The Bible illustrates many concepts using symbols, or word pictures. The potter and clay is one of the most significant and frequently used symbols of the relationship between a Sovereign God and His creation. In the first chapter of Genesis we read “God created man” (Genesis 1:27). The Hebrew word for created, bara, implies something new brought into existence by divine command. A few verses later, in Genesis 2:7, we are told “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” The Hebrew word formed is yatsar, which means to mold as a potter molds clay.

Creator and Molder

So, there are two aspects of how God brought man into being: God, the Creator, exercising His phenomenal creative force in bringing something new into existence and God the Potter, molding and fashioning man from the clay of the earth. What is man aside from the transformational power of God?

Think back to the way you were when you were first born again, before the Word was planted in your heart. If you are like most, you were in a sorry condition before the Potter began to mold and shape you. God has certainly done a wonderful work on my vessel of clay through the years. As a new Christian, I was clueless, naive and so timid that I seldom dared to speak up on the rare occasion that I had something to say. God has been fashioning, molding and shaping me for a while now, and His changes have been for my good.

It’s All Good

We should never lose sight of the fact that God corrects and instructs us for our good. He isn’t trying to take something away from us. As the Creator of the universe, God specifically created man for His own pleasure. God as Master Artist wants His creation to reflect His beauty and splendor and glory. ?He is fashioning us into fit and worthy vessels. As we come to trust in His unfailing good plans for us, we remain pliable in the Potter’s hands as He molds us into the image of Jesus. Our cry becomes that of Isaiah 64:8 “Yet, O LORD, you are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.” The Potter has absolute right over the clay – even if it is less than perfect.

God Perfects the Material as He Mold Us

It makes no difference if your vessel has been damaged in some way. Jer. 18:4 tells us how the Potter looks at a vessel that is marred: “And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.” So, under the Potter’s deft molding, you can be created anew! Your past and present circumstances are no limitations for God’s creative artistry. Your sins may be highly visible as prostitution, thievery or murder or they may be hidden sins such as idolatry, gossiping and complaining. It makes no difference; God can make you a new vessel. He will transform you in countless ways.

God wants to work on your vessel, too. But it’s up to you to choose to let Him.

Will you make the choice and the decision to place yourself completely in the hands of the Potter? Now, that’s the choice-driven life!

Prayer for Salvation:

God in Heaven, I come to You in the name of Your Son, Jesus. I confess that I haven’t lived my life for You. I believe that Jesus is the Son of God. I believe that He died on the cross and rose again from the dead so I might have a better life now and eternal life in heaven. Jesus, come into my heart and be my Lord and Savior. From this day forward, I’ll live my life for You to the best of my ability. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

    • Dear Olga ! The article is remarkable! Thank you !

A few days ago i dreamed and saw a man who told me that my body is created by God and i must propely support it.
He looked very severe and i felt ashame – i realize that mostly we are guilty of our illnesses. The man said that diseases of body cause the destruction of our mind and body.
He said that the best way to train body, soul and mind is to attend lessons of Chinese gymnastiks.
It is a very strange dream. Nevertheless i started to attend such class.

  2. Thank the Lord for sanctification! ;D

I like that you remind us of this fact that we should never lose sight of the fact that God corrects and instructs us for our good. He is a good God, He loves us why wouldn’t He correct us for our own good? We function better when we do what he tells us to do, our character gets better too..thanks again!!
