Who Is to Blame When Bad Things Happen?

“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.
I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”
John 10:10 

Have you ever suffered a loss and then started wondering “why” ? I know that many people struggle with God’s part in allowing bad things to happen. Let’s think about this for a moment.

When your child is in a car wreck, your house burns down or one of your family members dies, it is natural to question God’s reasons. Why did He allow this to happen and why did it happen to me? After all, if there is a reason, your mind wants to know it. It can become one of those questions burning on the inside of you that will not go away until it is answered.

And then eventually, God gets the blame. Or in a different way of blaming, God is said to have been testing us or teaching us a lesson of some kind.

I don’t believe God is the perpetrator behind the tragedies of life. But if not Him, who else could possibly be responsible for the devastating things that come into people’s lives?

John 10:10 clearly identifies who is behind the such loss and destruction. It says: “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.”

And who is this thief? We see in the previous verse that Satan is the thief. The next question is, “What is the thief’s sole motivation and mission?” As we read on we see that “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.” So, the only reason the thief comes to you, is to do evil. There is no other reason. But, praise God, the thief is not the only force at work in this world.

Let’s take a look at why Jesus came. Jesus came that we “may have life, and… have it more abundantly.” This is the sole purpose of Jesus; it was His reason for living and dying; it was His job description. Jesus’ mission is just the opposite of Satan’s: Jesus brings about the abundant blessing and favor of God.

First John 3:8 says, “For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.” Jesus did not come to destroy anything good in your life. He came to do battle with Satan.

So, let’s ask that question again: “Who is to blame when bad things happen?”

Yes, all those bad things come from the thief, who the Bible calls “the great dragon (who) was cast out, that serpent of old, called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world…” That same thief hates everything about you. The devil is the only one behind your destruction and God is ONLY for your good.

There is a God who loves you and He sent His Son whose Name is Jesus. Jeremiah 29:11 NLT (God says) “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”

Will you choose to blame the thief and trust God? Now, that’s the choice-driven life!
