Mercy Is Always On Your Side
Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being…
Psalm 51:6
Psalm 51 is a favourite of mine because its powerful message told in beautiful words. It tells us that God desires truth in our inner being. This means that if we want to receive God’s blessings, we must make a choice to become very honest with Him about what’s in our hearts.
We all sin, and when we do, we must be quick to repent. God is always ready to forgive us and wash all our sins away. He doesn’t sit and in heaven and consider whether to forgive us. No!! Before we ever go to Him to repent, He has already chosen to forgive us. He’s always ready. It’s our choice to repent.
Psalm 51 is David’s cry to God for mercy and forgiveness. He had sinned with Bathsheba, and when he learned she was pregnant, he compounded his bad choice by having her husband murdered in battle. But after David confessed his sin, God forgave him and told him that he would not die.
Most of us don’t know that David committed these sins approximately one full year before he wrote this psalm. He went through a very difficult time and had a hard time facing the truth. You see, as long as we don’t want to face the truth, whatever it is, we cannot truly repent. And as long as we don’t repent, we don’t receive the ever-available mercy and forgiveness of God.
When we fail God, we harm ourselves more than we realize. We knowingly make wrong choices, yet do it anyway. Just like David. First, there’s the consequence of the sin. But also there are the feelings we have about ourselves for having sinned.
That’s when the devil comes with his guilt tricks such as: “See, how bad you are. God won’t forgive you. This time you really went too far.” Why do we believe this stuff? The devil is a liar and we know it. Why should we believe anything he tells us? Don’t listen to those words, because there is no sin you’ve committed that God won’t forgive. You may have to live with the consequences of the sin, but God washes away every sin.
When you fail, remind yourself that you are not the only one who has ever failed. Think about the greatest king of Israel, who failed and then cried out to God about his sins. Know that God is merciful, ready to forgive you for your sins, failures or shortcomings (or whatever you choose to call them).
Will you choose to be quick to repent? Only then can you move on in life, knowing that God’s mercy and grace have covered you. Now, that’s the choice driven life!

Olga, this reminds me of a sin I had confessed but had a hard time believing I was forgiven. Because of incorrect legalistic teaching I thought maybe I couldn’t be forgiven. The scripture (Hebrews 10:26…) addressed to believers….that if you keep on sinning….that there is not another sacrfice for you….I took that as to mean there was no hope for me, that I lost my salvation because I knew the truth but I kept on sinning and didn’t repent. When I finally did repent this scripture torchered me a long time. Then some time later the Holy Spirit spoke to my heart and brought to my rememberance the same story about David and that God forgave him so why would he not forgive me? What I now understand that scripture to mean is He only had to die once, to not take that sacrifice and our free gift lightly, and we do need to stay in fellowship with Him by confessing our sins (sometimes daily) It does not mean we lose our salvation but that there will be punishment if we don’t repent. (And sometimes that punishment can be severe.)
Hi Laura, I think many people fight with this thought that you have, so thank you that took the time to write down your testimony. God desires to correct us of our sin, but He will always keep loving us.
