Get A Grip On Your Thought Life

Our thoughts are far more powerful than we often realize, and they impact every aspect of our existence, either positively or negatively. The Bible puts it like this: “as a man thinks in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 4:23). Our thoughts affect our relationships, our self-image, our finances, our health and our productivity.

Success in every aspect of life begins with a thought; so does failure. If we think we cannot do or accomplish something, chances are we will not be able to. That is how much influence our thoughts have over us. With so much at stake, we need to come to grips with our thought lives.

For example, perhaps you want to make a change in your life, such as starting a business or improving your health. Your desire begins as a thought, and then you talk about it with friends. The more you think about taking action, the more convinced you become that you can be successful. At some point, you will begin to take action to accomplish what you’ve been thinking and talking about.

On the other hand, perhaps God has put you in an unexpected place of opportunity. It may be something new He is asking you to do, and the thought “I’m not ready” pops into your mind. Instead of correcting that negative thought and replacing it with God’s Word, you continue to dwell on it. Suddenly you’re in a battle to control your thoughts, and it’s difficult to be in faith for the opportunity God has provided.

So what happens if you’ve missed God’s opportunity? Well, don’t allow your thoughts to dwell on the mistakes you’ve made or believe that too much time has passed. Direct your thoughts to the vision God placed within you and ask Him to help you as you pursue it. Align your thoughts with following the dreams God has placed in your heart, and nothing can keep them from coming to pass!

Philippians 4:8 sums up how we are to direct our thoughts: “…whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things” (NIV). That’s the choice driven life!

Will you choose to make quality choices about the thoughts you are thinking? Now, that’s the choice-driven life!

  1. As I was reading this devotion, I was thinking of Philippians 4:8, the very verse you ended with! I believe that’s why God gave us this verse… to spell out how to be successful and achieve those dreams He’s put in our hearts. Great post!
