Steps to Make Better Choices

I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death,
blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live.

Deut. 30:19 ESV

You can choose what you will study, the career you will pursue, where you will work, and what kind of employee you will be. Some of your choices will strengthen and empower you, while others will hold you back. YOU are the one who has the authority over your own life. You have the power over your choices.

Think about the power you have in making all choices that affect your career. The challenges you face, in most cases, arise not by accident, but from the choices you’ve made along the way.

For example:

  • You choose to complete a project on your own rather than working with an assigned team. You think, “I love this work, but my team members are slowing me down. I will do it all myself!” By making this choice, you alienate others, when you could be building a supportive network. There will be consequences from your choice to always “go it alone.”
  • You choose to give in to procrastination. There is a task you need to complete, but you delay and dawdle, always putting it off until later. Then when a problem comes up because you haven’t done what you’re supposed to, you forget all the times that you made the wrong choice and gave in to procrastination. Instead you feel like you can’t get a break. The boss is always on your case.
  • You choose to work all the time. You could be making the choice out of love for your family and a desire to provide for them. But instead, you make the choice out of greed and even complain about your long hours and how the recession makes it ever harder to make ends meet. The attitude you’ve chosen drains your energy, and creates problems in your family because of your resentment.
  • You choose to coast through your career, without making plans for the future. You feel that whatever happens, happens and you’ll just go with the flow and do what’s easiest. When you are passed over for raises and promotions, you don’t understand why. Maybe the boss has it in for you.

If you have ever made one of the poor choices described above, ask yourself why things are as they are. Consider why your life never seems to change for the better. You must come to the realization that you are responsible for what has happened to you, because you have exercised your free will to make choices.

I don’t think that anyone sets out to intentionally make poor choices. But the demands of life combined with the influence of friends and family, and perhaps the faulty impressions of right and wrong portrayed in the media, lead us into choices that are not good for us. Yet we continue to hope that somehow our choices will turn out for the best.

If any of what I’ve said here has challenged you to think about your choices, good! Listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit who is using this message to prick your heart to make changes. Don’t give into the resistance that will surely follow.

Will you make a choice  and ask Jesus to show you where you need to change? He is there for you to help you make better choices, step by step. Seek His direction and then do as He says. Now, that’s the choice-driven life!

The Most Important Choice You Can Make: Prayer for Salvation: God in Heaven, I come to You in the name of Your Son, Jesus. I confess that I haven’t lived my life for You. I believe that Jesus is the Son of God. I believe that He died on the cross and rose again from the dead so I might have a better life now and eternal life in heaven. Jesus, come into my heart and be my Lord and Savior. From this day forward, I’ll live my life for You to the best of my ability. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen. Click Here if you need more information.

  1. The worst choices I’ve made in my life are the ones I’ve made without asking God first. Thankfully He stays with us even when we go in the wrong direction!

  2. When I listen to God and let him take control, eveything goes well – better than I could have expected. I have stopped asking “why” things happen. Everything happens for a reason.

  3. Olga, I love your quote at the top of your article about direction and destination. It’s SO true! We live in a time of numbing down, zoning out, and disconnecting. Now is a critical time for all of us to choose to plow forward in the direction the Holy Spirit is giving us so we reach our destination. Thanks for sharing this simple, yet profound advice.
